20 kW Solar System Installation — Cost, Output and Payback
A 20 kW solar system generates roughly 32,000 units a year — about 86 to 90 units a day — at an indicative installed cost of ₹9,20,000 to ₹11,50,000. It suits mid-sized commercial buildings: hotels, schools, hospital wings, banquet properties and office floors with strong daytime consumption.

At this capacity the project becomes an engineering exercise rather than a product purchase. Twenty kilowatts of inverter capacity connected into an existing LT panel changes the electrical behaviour of the building, and the design has to account for protection coordination, earthing, cable sizing and how the system behaves when the grid misbehaves.
Specification
20 kW solar system — cost, output and requirements
Every figure below is modelled for Jaipur-region conditions on a clean, unshaded, correctly designed array. They are planning numbers, not a quotation.
| System capacity | 20 kW |
|---|---|
| Indicative installed cost | ₹9,20,000 – ₹11,50,000 |
| PM Surya Ghar subsidy | Not applicable — the scheme covers residential connections only |
| Tax treatment | Accelerated depreciation available to profit-making entities |
| Daily generation | 86 to 90 units on an average day |
| Annual generation | About 32,000 units |
| Roof area required | About 1,400 sq ft, shade-free |
| Solar panels | 36 to 38 modules at present-day panel wattage |
| Indicative annual saving | About ₹2,88,000 |
| Simple payback | 3.5 to 4.5 years |
Pricing is an indicative installed-cost band, not a quotation. Roof type, structure, mounting height, cable run length and module availability all move the figure, and a firm price is issued only after a site survey. Generation assumes roughly 1,600 kWh per kWp per year; savings assume the tariff stated on this page. Subsidy figures follow PM Surya Ghar as currently notified — verify current rates at pmsuryaghar.gov.in.
In practice
What a 20 kW system actually powers
Capacity is easy to quote and hard to picture. This is what the generation covers in a real building.
- A mid-sized hotel or banquet property
- A school or coaching institute building
- A hospital wing or diagnostic centre
- A commercial office floor or showroom complex
What 20 kW suits
Buildings that consume 30,000 to 40,000 units a year, most of it during daylight, are the natural fit. A hotel with laundry, kitchen refrigeration and air conditioning; a school running through the academic day; a diagnostic centre with continuous imaging and cooling load — all consume in exactly the hours the array generates.
Buildings with heavily evening-weighted load are a poorer fit at this size. They export a large share of generation at a lower credited value, which lengthens payback. In those cases we either size down to match the daytime baseline or model whether storage changes the answer.
Electrical design at 20 kW
Above roughly 15 kW the connection design matters as much as the array. We inspect the existing LT panel, check sanctioned load and available headroom, review protection settings and assess whether the incoming supply and earthing are in a state to accept the plant.
This is also where power quality enters the conversation. Buildings with lifts, chillers, VFDs or welding plant present a harmonically noisy environment, and inverter selection and filtering are engineered against the panel's actual condition rather than its rating plate.
Roof area, layout and access
A 20 kW array needs around 1,400 sq ft of usable roof. On commercial buildings the constraint is rarely total area — it is skylights, vents, plant rooms, water tanks, lift machine rooms and the shadows they cast. Usable area after those exclusions is frequently half of what a satellite image suggests.
We also design for maintenance from the start: walkway space between rows, safe access for cleaning, and inverters sited where a technician can reach them without a shutdown. An array that is difficult to service quietly stops being serviced.

20 kW solar system — frequently asked questions
What is the installation cost of a 20kW solar system?
Indicatively ₹9,20,000 to ₹11,50,000 in Rajasthan, before any tax treatment. The band reflects genuine variables — roof structure, mounting type, cable run lengths, the condition of the existing LT panel and whether any upgrade is needed to accept the plant. A survey converts it to a firm figure.
How much roof area is needed for 20kW of solar?
About 1,400 sq ft of genuinely usable, shade-free roof, including row spacing to prevent self-shading in winter and walkway space for cleaning. On commercial rooftops the usable figure is often far less than the total area once skylights, vents, plant rooms and water tanks are excluded — which is why we survey before committing to a capacity.
How much will a 20kW system save a hotel or school?
Around ₹2,88,000 a year at a commercial tariff near ₹9 a unit with strong daytime self-consumption. Hotels usually achieve high self-consumption because laundry, kitchen refrigeration and air conditioning run through generation hours. Schools do too during term, but export more during holidays — which is why we model the full year from actual bills.
Will a 20kW system work during a power cut?
No, not as a standard grid-tied installation. Grid-tied inverters are required to disconnect when the grid fails, both for safety and by regulation. If your building needs generation during outages, that requires a hybrid system with storage or an inverter with a dedicated backup output — a significantly different design and cost that we will scope separately if you need it.
