How to Choose Solar Panels in India (Without Buying on Brand Alone)
The specifications that matter in Rajasthan conditions — and the ones that sell panels without improving them.
Published · Updated

Key takeaways
- For any subsidised or government-linked project the module must be ALMM-listed — that is a compliance requirement, not a preference.
- In hot climates the temperature coefficient matters more than headline efficiency: a module that loses less output per degree performs better in a Rajasthan summer.
- Check the performance warranty (guaranteed output at year 25), not just the product warranty (build defects).
- TOPCon and n-type modules generally offer better temperature behaviour and lower degradation than older mono PERC designs.
- The inverter fails long before the modules do — it deserves as much scrutiny as the panels and usually gets far less.
Panel selection is where solar buyers spend most of their research time and get the least return on it. Modules are the most reliable component in a rooftop system, they are covered by the longest warranties, and the differences between reputable manufacturers are far smaller than the marketing suggests.
That said, some specifications genuinely matter in Rajasthan conditions, and some are noise. Here is how to tell them apart.
ALMM listing is the first filter
The Approved List of Models and Manufacturers is a government-maintained list of solar modules eligible for use in subsidised and government-linked projects. If you are claiming PM Surya Ghar, the modules must be ALMM-listed. This is not a quality preference — it is a condition of the claim.
Balance-of-system components should be BIS-certified. An installer who is vague about either is either not doing subsidised work regularly or is planning to substitute after contract.
Temperature coefficient beats headline efficiency
Module efficiency is measured at 25 °C. A Jaipur rooftop in May is nowhere near 25 °C — module temperatures well above 60 °C are routine, and every module loses output as it heats.
The temperature coefficient tells you how much. A module losing 0.30% per degree above test conditions will outperform one losing 0.38% per degree in real Rajasthan summer conditions, even if the second has a marginally higher nameplate efficiency. This is the specification most worth reading and the one least often quoted in a sales conversation.
Cell technology, in plain terms
Mono PERC has been the mainstream for years and remains perfectly sound. TOPCon and other n-type technologies are now widely available and generally offer a better temperature coefficient, lower first-year and long-term degradation, and better performance in diffuse light — which matters more in the monsoon than people assume.
Bifacial modules generate from the rear face as well, which is genuinely useful on elevated structures, ground mounts and reflective surfaces, and close to useless flat against a dark roof. Whether it is worth paying for depends entirely on the mounting, which is why the question cannot be answered before the survey.
Read the right warranty
Modules carry two different warranties and buyers routinely conflate them. The product warranty — typically 10 to 15 years — covers manufacturing defects. The performance warranty — typically 25 to 30 years — guarantees a minimum percentage of rated output at the end of the term.
The performance figure is the meaningful one. A module guaranteed to deliver 87% of rated output at year 25 is a materially better asset than one guaranteed 80%, and the difference compounds across the whole life of the plant.
- Product warranty — manufacturing defects, typically 10–15 years
- Performance warranty — guaranteed output at year 25, typically 80–90%
- First-year degradation — usually 1–2%, then roughly 0.4–0.55% per year

The component that actually fails
Modules rarely fail. Inverters do — they are the working electronics in the system, and a fifteen-year-old inverter is an old inverter. Yet buyers who spend a fortnight comparing module datasheets will accept whatever inverter appears on the quote.
Ask about the inverter's efficiency, its MPPT configuration, whether its capacity suits the array's loading ratio, its warranty term and extension options, and — most practically — who services it in Rajasthan and how quickly. An unsupported inverter brand is a five-year problem, not a twenty-five year one.
Frequently asked questions
Which solar panels are best for Indian conditions?
An ALMM-listed module from an established manufacturer with a strong temperature coefficient and a good performance warranty at year 25. In hot regions like Rajasthan, temperature behaviour and degradation matter more than headline efficiency. The brand differences between reputable manufacturers are far smaller than the differences between a well-engineered and a poorly engineered installation.
Are more efficient solar panels always better?
Only when roof area is the binding constraint. Higher efficiency means more watts per square metre, which matters on a small terrace and not at all on a large industrial shed. If you have spare roof, a lower-efficiency module at a better price and with a good temperature coefficient can be the smarter buy.
How long do solar panels last?
Modules are typically warranted to deliver 80–90% of rated output at year 25, and many keep generating well beyond that at a gradually declining rate. Expect roughly 1–2% degradation in the first year and 0.4–0.55% annually thereafter. The inverter, not the modules, is the component you should expect to replace within the system's life.
Why clients choose Dvaitam Solar
Engineering-first approach
Structural survey, seasonal shadow analysis and yield modelling before a capacity is quoted — never a catalogue picked off a price list.
Premium Tier-1 equipment
ALMM-listed modules and BIS-certified balance of system, specified against the engineering and not substituted after contract.
PM Surya Ghar assistance
Portal registration, DISCOM feasibility, net metering and inspection filed and chased until the subsidy is credited.
End-to-end EPC execution
Design, supply, civil, electrical, testing and commissioning under one scope and one accountable team.
Professional installation
Method statements, quality records captured as work proceeds, and measured commissioning tests rather than a switch-on.
Long-term support
Monitoring configured at handover, a documented O&M pack and a performance baseline you can hold the plant to in year five.
